In 2013, an auction house sold an antique Persian rug for more than $33 million.

While that leaves most of us with our jaws on the floor, it makes one thing clear: Gorgeous carpets are valuable, and something homeowners are willing to invest in.

The good news? You don’t have to shell out anywhere near that amount to get a great-quality rug that will instantly enhance your space. What you do need, however, is a good dose of style inspiration.

Today, we’re sharing a few tips on decorating with area rugs. Some are traditional, some are unexpected and all are utterly beautiful.

Ready to get started? Let’s go!

1. A Dining Room Stunner

Yes, this is an area that sees its fair share of spills, crumbs, and debris. Yet, you don’t have to leave the floors bare for easy cleanup.

Instead, opt for low-pile rugs that offer plenty of character and color while also being low-maintenance. Wool and polypropylene materials work well here, as do jute and cotton.

Then, why not extend the look by draping smaller-scale plush rugs over your chair seats? Faux sheepskin versions are especially luxe and comfortable.

2. A Punch of Color in the Kitchen

The area between the range and the island is an ideal spot for a runner. Especially if you’ve embraced the minimal, all-white modern farmhouse trend, go bold here.

Look for rugs that feature interesting patterns and motifs, as well as ones that complement any accent colors you have in the room.

As an alternative to a runner, you can also place two smaller rugs in the same spot. Chindi rugs or rag rugs are cozy underfoot and add a touch of rustic charm. They also wash up beautifully, making them a great pick for this splash and splatter zone.

3. A Surprising Bathroom Choice

Don’t limit yourself to the bath mat aisle at your local big-box store. In addition to falling apart after a few months, these are often ill-sized for your bathroom and can begin to show wear immediately.

Instead, think outside the box and use an indoor-outdoor area rug in your bathroom. Designed to hold up against moisture and dirt, they’re ideal in this space.

Look for natural-fiber materials, such as sisal or bamboo. These hold up well to dampness and humidity and add warmth to slick metal fixtures.

4. An Instant Bed Cover

Tired of your plain down comforter? Looking to turn your bedroom into a soothing haven of tranquillity?

Skip the expensive mood lighting and salt lamps. Instead, toss an ultra-soft area rug in muted green and blue tones over your bedspread instead.

For the ultimate in style and function, choose a flat-weave rug with a fringed bottom. Then, when you’re ready to hop in, the rug rolls neatly down to the foot of the bed in the summer or can be used for extra weight in the winter.

5. A Sweet Settee Touch

You could go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a new settee or loveseat for the living room. Or, you could repurpose an area rug and put a new spin on it!

Find one with colors that either blend with or contrast the furniture’s existing upholstery. Then, drape the rug over the back. Smooth the front down and tuck it between the back and bottom cushions.

To prevent the seat from turning into a slip-and-slide, leave about a foot of the rug hanging off the back. This weight will help anchor the addition and keep it in place.

6. A Sectional Accent

Do you have a long sectional taking up residence in your living room? If so, chances are it’s seen its fair share of wear and tear. This is especially true for leather sofas, which tend to crack and scratch as pets and children play.

That said, one of our favorite living room rug ideas is to use one to cover any unsightly scratches or stains on your furniture.

A low-weave geometrical print rug can freshen the aesthetic while also acting as a cover-up for those blemishes. Even if your couch is in pristine condition, this is a perfect way to save on throw pillows!

7. Unexpected Wall Decor

You may have an antique quilt or two hanging on your wall, but have you considered adding an area rug into the mix?

Both visually interesting and fashion-forward, this trend showcases the best rugs for what they are — works of art.

For best results, don’t just hang any one you come across. Instead, hold out for a special one with rich hues and an intricate design that you’ll want to look at every day.

It’s also helpful to find one with a defined, solid border that can act as a “frame” in this application. Of course, fringed styles add plenty of Bohemian whimsy, so those could also work well, too!
