The average person spends about $1,200 on bedroom furniture. You don’t have to go nuts buying all new furniture to get a Pinterest worthy bedroom though.

If you can’t remember the last time that you gave your bedroom an update, then now is a perfect time. We have 10 tips to help your bedroom decor look like a Pinterest inspo picture.

1. Get a Statement Bed

If you can’t do a lot, focus your efforts on getting a statement bed. Look for one that has intricate details to add interest to the room.

Keep in mind the size of your room; statement bedframes does not mean large. If you buy a bedroom that is too large for your bedroom, then you take up too much space, and the whole room will feel confined.

You can embrace multiple trends by finding a statement bed frame that is made of light wood. This will bring natural materials into the room. Another option is to embrace white and look for one that is bright white and clean.

2. Embrace Layers

You can create a warm and inviting atmosphere by layering different textiles and fabrics. To prevent the look from becoming overwhelming, stick to neutrals.

Look for subtle prints and solid in complimentary shades of black, grey, brown, and tan. To keep your room visually interesting, don’t let everything match exactly.

3. Pick One Color

Do you have a favorite color? Stick to that color and decorate using various shades of that one color. The trick to making this look successful is to look for complimentary, not matching, pieces.

If you make everything the same shade, you take away any visual interest. Look for pieces that are both dark and light. Then add in pieces that use your color and a neutral.

4. Get Creative with Storage

Couldn’t we all use more storage space? If you find that you could use more, look for furniture that offers hidden storage.

There are beds that come with drawers underneath them. Or chairs and footstools that have hidden compartments.

5. Embrace the Pale

Lighter colors are bright and easier on the eyes. Stick to pale shades if your bedroom is smaller or doesn’t have a lot of light. This will help prevent the room from feeling like a dark cave.

Don’t feel obligated to only use pale colors though. Random accents of dark will contrast and interest.

6. Embrace the Season

It isn’t practical to think you’ll give your bedroom a makeover every season. But embracing the current season can help lift your mood.

So look at ways you can affordably add fresh life to your bedroom. You could change out the cushions and throw on your bed. Choose bright or pale pinks, blues, and greens for spring.

Or you could use a sunny yellow and orange during the summer. In winter, you could embrace winter with icy white, grey, or pale blue.

Then think about fabrics, winter is the perfect time to add some fleece or fur. But in summer these fabrics would be too heavy. So look for lighter materials like soft linen.

7. Find Your Lighting

The interior designers will tell you that every room needs three lighting options. So how many does your room have?

If the only light in your room is the light on the ceiling fan, then you are doing your bedroom a disservice. These lights are harsh and do not provide any sort of mood lighting.

You don’t have to get rid of these lights. What you should do is look for some accent lighting. This could be a couple of accent lights you place on a shelf. Or you could glam up your room with a metal chandelier.

8. Get a Rug or Two

Laminate, tile, or wood can feel cold and hard on your bare feet. Old carpet can look dingy and lose its fluffiness.

Replacing your flooring is probably not an option, but that doesn’t mean you are stuck with it. Instead, look for some colorful and plush rugs.

You could go for a more traditional look by purchasing one large rug. Or you could opt for a modern and eclectic look by layering different rugs together.

Whatever option you choose, make sure your rugs cover a proper amount of floor to look proportional.

If the rug is too small, it will look like it’s oddly floating in the middle of the room. Go too big, and the rug will overpower your room.

You want the edge of your rug to meet with the furniture. That way it has an “anchored” look.

9. Move Your Furniture Around

Empty your room and move the bed to the other side of the room. Or move your dresser to be in a different spot.

You may find that simply moving your furniture gives you more space and a whole new outlook on your bedroom. This is also a great way to figure out what furniture pieces need replacing and what ones work in your room.

Don’t be afraid to put your bed in front of the window. Or you could start using your dresser as your nightstand. Don’t box yourself in by thinking you have to follow traditional design rules.

10. Change the Hardware

Do you have boring mass produced furniture? Breathe new life into it by giving it a custom look. Start by giving it a new finish such as painting it.

You could paint it a white or soft grey to keep on trend. You could also paint it a shade of your chosen color if you are doing tip number 3 on this list.

Once your old furniture looks like new, it’s time to give it new hardware. A modern trend is to use different metals. Don’t be afraid to mix and match your hardware.

Upgrade Your Bedroom Decor

When it comes to having a Pinterest worthy bedroom the key is to coordinate and compliment. Pick key pieces that work together but not necessarily match perfectly.

Less is more when it comes to decorating your bedroom. Thoughtfully pick your decor instead of throwing everything you find in there. Most importantly, your bedroom decor should reflect who you are.
